Feb 5, 2010

Today was failtastic in the best way possible.

this morning i slept in and it felt great but when i woke up i had some not so great tummy troubles. I come to find out that Courtney has the same troubles! i wonder what was wrong with the food last night. i think Lauren made it so i'll blame her. that should have been our clue to stay home. This morning the maid was downstairs cleaning up. she came in and mopped my floor which was badly needed. it also caused a lack of privacy which i really needed. it's ncie to have cleaner floors. i don't feel like such a pig.

We go and meet ariel at Montmartre to find the Dali museum which i was stoked out of my mind to see. the map in my paris book ended up getting us really lost and we had the hardest time finding where we were supposed to go. we had to turn around and backtrack about six times. When i did the montmartre walk for my paris walks class, i did not stop to notice how darn cute it is. it's really a quaint part of town and super cute. there are so many hills that some of the legal roads are actually just stair cases. Well, we were feeling a tad urgent to find this museum because courtney was still being bugged by last nights dinner. we finally noticed that there was a sign pointing right to it and felt really smart. when we walked to the door i tried pulling, but it didn't work so i pushed, but there was actually a file cabinet in the way so i pushed the other door which oped up enough for us to come in. we were all shuffling in when a guy came out and started laughing because the place was closed. well we all laughed about that for a few min because we didn't bother reading the sign saying it was closed and we were confused about why it didn't occur to any of us that furniture infront of the door prob meant that it was closed. Today, i broke into the Dali museum. it was great. It opens up on the 8th so we're going back for next week. i just really hope the same guy isn't there...

In Montmartre, there are lots of street painters which and little venues. also there was a cello player just playing in the streets. i now know what i'm going to do for a living. I didn't have too many problems with gypsies this go around in that area. I think that's a part of Paris i will def want to show the family. I'm worried about showing you everything while you all are here!

while we were wondering around, these boys started to flirt with us. I didn't really know how to respond so they wondered off One looked like Penn Badgley! http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0046112/ he was pointing at my head band and smiling at me. I wish i knew hot to flirt with parisian boys without something uncomfortable happening. I joked about us asking them to come to lunch with us and them selling us to human traffickers.

we finally found a bathroom for courtney. when Ariel was washing her hands, another lady walked down. i tried to tell her in french that there were two rooms, one with the toilet and another with a sink so she was safe to go in. she looked at me blankly and Ariel walked out just then. i said "c'est libre maintanant" and she said "oh, je comprende libre" and laughed and walked in. she totally didn't even speak french! she was American. classic.

After that we decided to do another paris walk. we did the one called "Marcher le nez ou vent: Sights and Smells around the Madeleine." here's my blog entry from that for class: "Madeleine Church is really odd. it does seem like a very strange mix of styles. i don't think it was my favorite church to visit. I was pleasantly surprised to see that there were flour stands outside the church during this time of year. At Laduree, we bought some macaroons to share between the three of us. my favorite was the raspberry flavor. it was really good, almost as good as the mango macaroon Rebecca got at Pierre Herme. I felt super out of place walking from there to the next place because it was a super well to do road full of brand name stores like chanel. Ariel and i discussed how we never see girls with off brand uggs like we have and that maybe brand names are a bigger deal here than in the states. I was surprised by how small chapelle de l'assomption is. It's very empty in there too. The Fragonard museum was ok. I went to the bigger one in southern France, so it wasn't as exciting. i decided to buy some little gifts for my family from the cheaper section. It was fun to see something familiar. It's funny to see how much Olivier wrote about the different perfumes in the guide book. The walk was really short and very relaxing. it was basically just a nice strole in the city."

What i didn't mention was that we went into the wrong door to the Madeleine church at first and had to be redirected to the right door, very much reminiscent the Dali incident. Of course i was the first one to go in again. good times....

after that we decided we wanted Falafles in the jewish quarter so we headed over there. All the falafel places were closed today! it isn't even saturday. we struck out again. We decided that we could just break into one o the stands and make our own... but we didn't. we went to our usual sandwich place instead but the things we got weren't up to the usual good standard. what is up with today!

we stopped by this shoe store on the way to our sandwich place. it had really relatively cheap shoes in there ranging from 5-30 eauros. I found a pair of knee high boots much like yesterdays that were only 15 euros. I'm going back tomorrow to see if i can get myself to make a decision and buy a pair of shoes. what kind of boots should i get? they had all sorts of choices there. the knee high boots were more slowchy so not as sexy. thoughts? sales are about to end. I also want to see if i can spend some money in londen next week. basically it comes down to what mom says. hah.

When the three of us were eating dinner, we were sitting on the fountain by hotel de ville with the carousel and ice rink in front of us which was pretty romantic. behind us were sitting a ton of Arab guys. Courtney and ariel went off to get crepes and i stayed behind feeling a little more uncomfortable about those guys. when Courtney and Ariel came back they started saying "bonjour, misses..." etc and i was ignoring them. right when one of other guy said in french "you need to do english" i got up and left. Courtney was like "what's up? why are we leaving?" and i said that i didn't want to talk to those guys. Ariel said "didn't you want to flirt with some french guys?" and i said that they weren't exactly french. she then jokingly called me racist and a black guy smiled at her right when she said that. it was odd but pretty funny.

The dad came in with a brand new microwave and installed it in my room. my room didn't look too bad and was freshly mopped as i already said. he's a pretty funny guy. i like hi a lot. i feel more comfortable with him that his wife. He's really confusing when he speaks english though. for some reason i never get what he's trying to say.

well today was one of the more unfortunate but fun days of the whole stay here. so many ridiculous things happened. it was just a day to laugh about. it was also super useless. tomorrow i think we're planning on going back to that shoe place and maybe doing another walk. hopefully tomorrow will be more fun and just as ridiculous!

and my need to diet is getting more dire. my cloths are getting tighter. i'm worried. i was talking to courtney and i was like "is this what quitting smoking is like?" and she said "i think it's worse." oh great.

and i had a dream that i started smoking. i'm so surrounded by it here.
